Must see video: Spur Fire destroys homes, leads to evacuation in Bagdad
BAGDAD, Ariz. — The Yavapai County Sheriff's Office said 25-30 homes have been destroyed in the Spur Fire burning in Bagdad, a small mining community west of Prescott.
The 150-acre fire forced evacuations Thursday night and crews were still actively working to contain the fire Friday morning, YCSO said. The fire is 25% contained.
State routes 96 and 97 are both closed driving into Bagdad, YCSO said.
An initial investigation shows a road construction crew may have ignited the fire, the sheriff's office said.
Damage to utility structures has been reported, and power lines were de-energized for safety as the fire burned through fiber optic cables, according to YCSO.
A code red "GO" message was sent to 1,500 people in residences north of Main Street telling them to evacuate.
Evacuees can go to Hassayampa Elementary School at 195 E Coconino St. in Wickenburg as the Red Cross prepares the next steps.
YCSO deputies evacuated all residences east of Lindahl Road and a roadblock is in place at Lindahl Road and Main Street. People are asked to avoid the area.
All 911 phone lines were down Thursday night but have since been fixed.
Bagdad is about 114 miles northwest of Phoenix.
