Governor Ducey instituted curfew after protests turned violent

PHOENIX, Ariz. (KYMA, KECY) - A statewide curfew instituted in the wake of violent protests and looting expires at 5 a.m. Monday.

Governor Doug Ducey issued an Emergency Declaration last Sunday after protests over the killing of George Floyd turned violent. The Phoenix area saw the majority of the rioting and looting, but it was also reported in other cities.

During a press conference later in the week, Ducey included Yuma on a list of trouble spots. However, the Yuma Police Department (YPD), and Yuma County Sheriff's Office (YCSO) both say they saw no problems during the city's peaceful protest. Mayor Doug Nicholls reaffirmed law enforcement's observations in a call to the governor Friday.

The curfew expires on the heels of a tenth consecutive night of protests against racism and police brutality in the Phoenix area. More than 3,000 people took to the streets again Saturday night. However, the demonstrations have been mostly peaceful since the arrest of all four police officers accused of killing Floyd. Phoenix police say they haven't made any protest-related arrests for six straight nights.
