The west facing water cut threats amid water shortages

(CBS, KYMA) - The drought-stricken west is now facing a moment of reckoning that could affect the entire country.

Nearly half the country's vegetables and most fruit and nuts come from California.

Many farmers there rely on water from the Colorado River, but a warming climate has led to less snowpack and less snowmelt feeding the river.

Communities in multiple states could now face federally mandated water cuts leading to higher costs for farmers and higher food prices for the country.

Lake Mead and Lake Powell the nation's two largest reservoirs have fallen to their lowest combined levels on record, both less than 30% full.
