Illinois launches statewide Blue Envelope Program for drivers with autism

CHICAGO (NBC, KYMA) - The state of Illinois launches a statewide program for drivers with autism.

Traffic stops can be stressful for anyone, for people on the Autism spectrum, they can be especially challenging due to differences in communication and processing information.

Now, Illinois state officials are expanding a program designed to make those interactions easier and safer for everyone involved.

The "Blue Envelope Program" gives drivers, passengers, and vehicle owners a blue envelope to hold their driver's license, vehicle registration, and proof of insurance.

When presented during a traffic stop, the envelope alerts law enforcement officers that the individual may communicate differently or need extra time to understand and respond to instructions.
