Flight-tracking animation captures single Spirit Airlines flight airborne amid shutdown announcement

(CBS, KYMA) - A flight-tracking animation captured a single Spirit Airlines plane airborne Friday into Saturday amid news that the airline would cease operations.

Flightradar24 provided footage showing the plane's flight path from Detroit Metropolitan Wayne County Airport in Michigan to Dallas Fort Worth International Airport in Texas.

"Only one Spirit Airlines aircraft is airborne right now — the #1 most tracked flight. Many believe this is the airline’s final flight," Flightradar24 wrote in a post on X.

In a statement released to X in the early hours of Saturday, the airline said it had started "winding down its global operations, effective immediately. All flights have been cancelled, and customer service is no longer available."
