YPD releases footage of officer-involved shooting

YUMA, Ariz. (KYMA, KECY) - The Yuma Police Department (YPD) Chief Thomas Garrity held a press conference Thursday on the officer-involved shooting that happened in April.

Yuma police said showed critical incident video and body-worn camera footage during the press conference.

On Friday, April 12, there was an officer-involved shooting that happened in the area of 10th Street and Magnolia Avenue.

In the footage, you can see officers first confronting the man and you can see he has an object in his hand. Police can be heard asking the man to drop the knife several times.

Eventually, they follow him along a canal before he makes it to a neighborhood on 10th Street and Magnolia Avenue.

The video then shows the man was tased before police shot him.

Yuma police confirmed 12 shots were fired.

They still did not disclose how many times the man was hit by gunfire.

He was taken to the hospital and then flown to Phoenix but has since been released from the hospital.

They said this is still part of an ongoing investigation and that the officers involved are on modified duty while the investigation continues.
