Five people arrested over the weekend for residential burglary and criminal trespassing

YUMA, Ariz. (KYMA, KECY) - Yuma deputies say five people were caught in the act, breaking into a foothills home over the weekend.

On Friday night, three men and two women were arrested for attempted burglary after a neighbor called 911.

It all started in a quiet foothills neighborhood around 9 p.m.
“The neighbor did know that there was nobody that was supposed to be in the home and they called to report that there was an unfamiliar vehicle at the home and there were lights going on and off in multiple areas of the home,” said YCSO Public Affairs Specialist, Tania Pavlak.

Yuma County Sheriff’s deputies rushed to the scene.
“When deputies arrived they were able to make contact with somebody who was in the home, it was not the homeowner, and they then stated that they were relatives, that they were familiar with the homeowner and they were allowed to be there,” said Pavlak.

When that deputy was speaking to a person in home, four other people tried to escape from the house.
“There were other people that were trying to exit the home undetected but they were able to be detained by other deputies that were also responding,” said Pavlak.

25-year-old Giselle Cardenas, 22-year-old Jonathan Hernandez, and 33-year-old Carmen Maldonado, along with two other suspects were arrested and booked on second degree residential burglary and first degree criminal trespassing.

They were in the home but were not able to steal anything thanks to deputies

One foothills resident says he didn’t hear about the burglary, but it’s disappointing.
“It’s unfortunate, people go to work every day and they try to take care of their own and then somebody that has no respect, they disrespect somebody’s home and their property and do what they do,” said Mark, a foothills resident.

Mark encourages neighbors to watch out for each-other.
“Keep everything locked up, talk to your neighbors, be aware of all your surroundings," said Mark.

The Yuma County Sheriff’s Office also has a vacation watch program so deputies will know when you’re not going to be home and they can keep an eye out on your home for you.
