Yuma County providing summer heat relief
EDITOR'S NOTE: Disabled American Veterans' (DAV) address was previously listed down as a Water Site and Cooling Center. DAV said they are not a cooling station.
YUMA, Ariz. (KYMA, KECY) - Yuma residents know that summer in the desert brings high temperatures, but what many of us forget is that our heat can be deadly.
From June to September, the State of Arizona and specifically Yuma County can experience deceptively dangerous temperatures.
Because it is not like a blizzard, where one can look outside and see the severity of the weather, many Arizonans are often unprepared to deal with our heat.
Heat is the single most dangerous natural phenomenon in Arizona.
Each year, between 30 and 50 residents die from excessive exposure to heat.
Local cooling centers and water sites are available to protect the Yuma community from the dangers of excessive heat.
There are several types of heat alerts that Yumans should be aware of.
Heat Advisories are when the temperature is forecast to be unusually hot but not life-threatening.
A Heat Watch is when a life-threatening heat emergency may occur in the next 24 to 48 hours.
And Heat Warnings are when a life-threatening emergency exists or is imminent.
