Elementary students hosts farmer’s market
YUMA, Ariz. (KYMA, KECY) - Gary A. Knox elementary school hosted a student-run farmers market Wednesday, selling produce to locals .
The students learned just what it takes to work in agriculture, in the winter lettuce capital of the United States.
“So at the start it was us working hard, taking out the weeds to make sure crops would grow, and then we planted the seeds,” said fifth grade student, Alberto Busani.
The students planted the produce back in October, growing the crops from seed to harvest
“It took a couple months for us to finish growing them and then it took time harvesting all of them from all our beds,” said Busani.
Alberto says one thing he learned is the value of being patient.
“We know how it feels, it takes some time, everything won’t happen in one day. You have to have patience,” said Busani.
Another student, Samuel Navarette says they faced challenges along the way.
“My favorite part was protecting them because there was a lot of gophers just eating the iceberg lettuce,” said Navarette.
The students bagged up the vegetables and sold them to locals for ten dollars.
All benefits from the market will go back to the agricultural science program, so the students can gear up for the next growing season.
And left-over food from the sale will be donated to Crossroads Mission.
