High homicide rate ranks third highest in Sonora

SAN LUIS RIO COLORADO, Son. (KYMA, KECY) - San Luis, Mexico closed 2022 with the third-highest homicide rate in the state of Sonora.

The border registered 162 homicides.

Locals in San Luis, Mexico say they don't feel safe and that it also affects local businesses.

"Not too long ago it was very unsecure. Even us as taxi drivers felt it. some of my co-workers were assaulted and some of them even died," says Francisco Navarro, a taxi driver.

The City of San Luis, Mexico says it does have a budget of more than $10 million for public safety.

That would help buy two more patrol units and new armor for police officers.

But it's still unclear if this will help bring these numbers down.
