U.S. reached 1 million organ transplants

MGN

(KYMA, KECY) - Donor Network of Arizona - the state's organ procurement organization - said it credits hospitals, transplant centers and other donation partners in the state and throughout the country for making this possible.

The first successful transplant - a kidney donation - was performed in 1954.

Now doctors can do lung, heart, pancreas, liver, kidney and partial intestine transplants.

There's also cornea and other of types of tissues that can be donated but the work continues.

And the kidneys happen to be the highest in need for the 106,000 patients on the national organ waiting list.

The gift of life could not happen without donors and their families.
