City of Somerton gives free food to residents
YUMA, Ariz. (KECY, KYMA) - The City of Somerton hosted a food drive this morning, to help ease residents’ spending amidst inflation.
Bright and early Saturday morning in Somerton, the line of cars went on for miles.
With residents waiting for a carload of food.
The Somerton community came together for a good cause, at no cost to residents.
“People started lining up at 5 a.m. This morning. What we’re doing is we just want to help lend a hand to community members. Right now, as you know we are an agriculture community and during the summer, work is very scarce, so we know that we all need the help somehow,” said Somerton Councilwoman, Lorena Zendejas.
Everyone from firefighters, to city council members, to Somerton residents gathered to volunteer at Somerton Community Center to fill cars full of food.
“I came down with the fire department. We’re volunteering today to help fill boxes for the food drive. Especially right now with everything and how high the prices are, we know a lot of families are hurting so it’s awesome to be able to give back and help them out,” said Crystal Ontiveros, a Somerton Cocopah Paramedic Firefighter.
The food was donated by Gethsemani Food Ministry in San Luis.
“So what we’re giving out is everything from bread to salads, to face masks, hand sanitizers, wipes, we have turkeys, water bottles, we even have Starbucks coffee bags, we also have popcorn to give out. Just a wide variety of food for our community,” said Zendejas.
The next food drive will take place in San Luis, Arizona, on Saturday August 13th, located at 1010 B Street.
