VIDEO: 5-year-old dies in hot car in Texas

HOUSTON (NBC) - Officials in Houston say a child was pronounced dead after being left inside a hot car for several hours Monday.

In Houston, Texas, a 5-year-old is dead after being left in a hot car for several hours.

Harris County deputies responded to a home in the summerwood area at around 3 p.m.

Officials said the child, a sibling and their mother had returned home from running errands.

After 2-to-3 hours the mother noticed the 5-year-old was not in the home and began looking.

She checked the car and found the child unresponsive, still buckled in a car seat.

The mother immediately called 911 and EMS pronounced the child dead at the scene.

According to the mother, the child knew how to unbuckle themselves from the car seat and had done so before.

They also noted that the family was driving in a rental vehicle, but it is unclear if that was factor in the child's death.

An investigation is ongoing.
