Brian Fernandez running for Arizona State Senate
YUMA, Ariz. (KYMA, KECY) - Yuma native, Brian Fernandez, who is currently a member of the Arizona House of Representatives, is now in the running for State Senate.
The Yuma County Board of Supervisors appointed Fernandez to his current position, representing district four, just last year.
“I was appointed last year. My mother had the seat for eight years, she left to go to the Biden administration and I just applied and didn’t really expect to be selected but I was, and I am now running for the State Senate in the newly drawn District 23,” said Fernandez.
District 23 includes includes Goodyear, Gila Bend, Ajo, Tucson, Yuma, Somerton and San Luis.
Fernandez says some of his passions are fighting for our water rights and education.
“Yuma has water, but we’ve never had a great education system. If we can get more bachelors degree programs available for people here, employers are going to be more likely to want to move to Yuma and I think that that’s gonna be the wave of Yuma’s future," said Fernandez.
While Fernandez’s campaign for senate is up and running, he is also keeping busy in the House of Representatives, working on getting funding to expand Cesar Chavez Boulevard in San Luis.
“That road is very congested, you can wait in line for hours to get through and I think when they built that road, they just didn’t expect that kind of growth and how San Luis was going to be growing," said Fernandez.
He hopes this bill is a part of the state budget.
The Arizona Primary Election will take place on August 2nd.
