Russia to evacuate thousands of civilians from Mariupol

(KYMA, KECY/ NBC News) - Ukraine says it has reached a preliminary agreement with Russia to evacuate thousands of civilians from Mariupol Wednesday.

The establishment of the humanitarian corridor will allow women, children and older people to leave the besieged city.

This comes after nearly 300 people were killed when a theater was destroyed during relentless bombardment of the city last month.

The structure was reduced to rubble in an airstrike during the height of fighting in the city.

Ukrainian authorities are calling it the war's deadliest known attack on civilians yet.

Mariupol has been one of the hardest hit cities in Ukraine since the war began.
