Biden expected to boycott Olympics, put pressure on China’s human rights

(KYMA, KECY/ CNN) - The Biden Administration is expected to announce a diplomatic boycott of the 2022 Beijing Olympics this week.

While the move would still allow U.S. athletes to compete, no U.S. government representatives would be in attendance.

President Joe Biden told reporters last month he was contemplating such a move to protest China's human rights abuses.

The diplomatic boycott is designed to put more pressure on China to reform its policies before the winter games begin on February 4th.

The last time the U.S. fully boycotted the Olympics was in 1980 when former President Jimmy Carter was in office.
