Rock-throwing incidents in Arizona lead to injuries
A victim tells her story and a captain warns drivers to be wary
TUSCON, Ariz. (KYMA, KECY/CNN) - According to the Department of Public Safety (DPS), there have been six rock-throwing incidents along Interstate 8 since October 26.
One victim of these incidents, Sydney Navarro, recalls her windshield getting smashed by a block of cement on Interstate 10, which then hit her girlfriend, Arielle Mitchell, in the face.
"From my point of view she had a hole in her face. I panicked immediately, I was screaming for her," expressed Navarro.
Her girlfriend was left with a broken cheek and jaw bone, who Navarraro says was lucky enough that there wasn't a different outcome.
Captain Ben Trueba, DPS overnight captain, explains that incidents like these aren't uncommon.
"Throughout the state and throughout the country, rock throwing events happen quite often," explained Captain Trueba. "People need to be vigilant, pay attention to their surroundings. If they see someone with a rock, they need to call it in to 911."
