EL CENTRO, Calif. (KYMA, KECY) - El Centro's mayor on Monday joined with veterans, families, and members of the community in honoring those who made the ultimate sacrifice for their country.
The city's Memorial Day ceremony included speeches, a rifle salute, and prayers. For veterans, it also included a lot of reflection.
Thomas Henderson is a local Veteran who fought in the Vietnam War. He was in the military for more than eight years.
“I lost my sergeant in Cambodia, we had gone 6 months without serious issues, we were ambushed in Cambodia,” he said.
Local Veteran Ramon Castro is from Brawley. He remembered a fellow U.S. Marine Corps corporal who lost his life back in 2000 in a flight test from Yuma to Tucson.
“It means a lot, today is a day to remember those who didn’t make it while training and those who did not make it back,” he said.
Mayor Cheryl Walker was among many who attended the ceremony in Bucklin Park. Many community members gathered to honor those who have fallen and those who continue to serve our country.
"We need to remember not only the service members that we have lost, but their families as well, I think it is so important that we honor them and their families," she said.
Although today is Memorial Day, VFW post 9305 explain that In November a special mobile Vietnam memorial wall is coming to Bucklin Park in El Centro. That'll be in honor of Veterans Day. It'll be open to the public from November 10th to November 15th.
