The Mexicali government says Olmeda received the keys from Calexico City's Mayor Rosie Arreola-Fernandez on Wednesday. After receiving the keys, Olmeda said, "Historically, you cannot understand Mexicali, without Calexico, or Calexico without Mexicali, beyond the brotherhood diplomatic there is, we are a single region, along with the Imperial Valley, we have affection and stories that unite us.”

Olmeda says without a doubt, over the years both communities have reached out to each other, in addition to sharing the same interests, values, economy, customs, and traditions.

The mayor of Mexicali says now more than ever they unit together to combat COVID-19.

Olmeda thanked the cooperation of the Calexico government to establish the necessary measures to help reduce the risks posed by this pandemic, emphasizing that this is not the time to let down our guard.

The virus has devastated communities and families on both sides of the border.

“It was raised by councilman Garcia that we formulate a COVID task force. It’s something that we whole heartily support so we are going to get that off before," said Bill Hodge, Calexico councilman.

Hodge hopes a task force will help mitigate the virus as well as open the door for future projects that include shared interests in the environment, economy, and security.

Meanwhile, the city of Calexico tries to move forward on a positive note. The city continues to deal with backlash for the appointing of Rosie Fernandez as mayor.

“I see these people that have gone beyond constructive criticism. They have every right to protest, they have every right to criticize," said Hodge.

The council on Wednesday standing with Fernandez and asking those not in favor to do things the right way and file a formal recall of the mayor.

“With Fernandez's mayorship, we are stable, and Calexico is moving forward. We are going to meet on progressive goals and continue to work hard for the community," said Hodge.

A group of individuals calling for Fernandez to resign is planning to protest Saturday evening.
