EL CENTRO, Calif. (KYMA, KECY), Protesters in Imperial County called for justice at a Black Lives Matter protest in front of the El Centro courthouse Monday.

“We’re here to speak out against the murder of George Floyd," said Marlene Thomas, IV Social Justice Committee.

“Then they say, but stay at home, avoid the police. But then I looked at Brenna Taylor, who was shot and killed at 1:00 am at her house," said Hilton Smith, Black Lives Matter.

Hundreds of community members gathered to support Black Lives Matter and the Imperial Valley Social Justice Club, many hoping to bring change and an end to the senseless killings of black lives.

"I’m looking at young people and this is where the change is going to come about. It just gives me a lot of hope," said Thomas.

“We’re the future, we’re here to show the people younger than us what is right. Continue to show the people even older than us that we need to make a change. What has been going on is wrong and it’s not working," said Gabby, and El Centro resident.

Local law enforcement was also present to stand in solidarity.

"That behavior is not condone by the Imperial Valley Chief and Sheriffs Association and respected agencies, we do not condone that behavior," said Gerardo Gonzalo, Calexico Police Department chief.
