Bicycle sales rise during pandemic

Local businesses report issues meeting demand

YUMA, Ariz. (KYMA, KECY) - As many businesses struggled under stay-at-home orders, one industry kept rolling towards record breaking profits - bicycle sales.

Bike shop owners in Yuma say they've had a hard time meeting demand. Some owners say as soon as a bicycle's put together, it's already out the door.

Mr. B's has been in the Bennett family for over four decades. The shop has seen business pick up mometum during the pandemic. Donald Bennett says it's been tough keeping bikes in stock.

" My gosh, our sales are up over 300- percent. In the past three months we've run out of bikes, which I've apologized for several times. But, we're getting bikes shipped in from New York, the east coast, Philadelphia, Ohio places like that". says Bennett.

Bennett says his customers tell him they're tired of being cooped up and want to get out. Others say, with the closure of local gyms, they want a way to stay in shape. Regardless of the reason, Bennett encourages everyone to take advantage of Yuma's bike paths. He considers them hidden gems.
