One dead, another injured in Dateland crash
YUMA, Ariz. (KYMA, KECY) - Arizona Department of Public Safety (DPS) confirm that one person is dead and another in serious condition after a wrong way crash on Interstate 8 Sunday morning.
DPS received reports of the crash at 6:25 a.m May 17, of a wrong way driver traveling eastbound in the westbound lanes at milepost 58 near Yuma.
The wrong way driver was confirmed by DPS to be 41-year-old Arturo Canales of Phoenix.
Canales was traveling the wrong way on Interstate 8 and hit another vehicle, causing a complete shutdown of the westbound lanes of travel for hours.
Both victims of the crash were taken out of their burning cars by those passing by.
Canales was pronounced dead at the scene, and the other driver was flown to Goodyear with serious injuries.
The crash is currently under investigation, and it is yet undetermined if alcohol played a factor.
