MEXICALI, B.C. (KYMA, KECY)-As of Sunday, the new hours of operation at the Calexico East Port of Entry are from 6 a.m to 2 p.m., in an effort to reduce the risk of COVID-19 to officers and travelers.

This has created reactions of discontent and confusion for several motorists who use that port of entry to return to their place of origin.

According to the United States Customs and Border Protection, since March 21 the restriction on non-essential travel was applied and waiting times have been reduced considerably since the flow of vehicular traffic has decreased to 62% and increases to 92% at the pedestrian crossing.

However, with this new measure motorists fear that long lines will begin at the ports of entry of the Mexicali - Calexico border. With this measure, the Mexican customs office also reduced the entry times of vehicles to Mexico.

The new schedule does not apply to operations of the port of entry to commercial cargo transportation.
