Easterseals help clean up Main Street
EL CENTRO, Calif. (KYMA, KECY) Easterseals an adult daycare in El Centro joined forces with the El Centro Police Department (ECPD), and downtown store owners to help clean up Main Street.
"The majority of the problems are community issues that we need to address together, and that's what this program is about," said Sgt. James Thompson, ECPD.
Home Depot in El Centro also helped in the collaborative effort to revive downtown El Centro.
"We were very fortunate that they were able to donate the tools needed for the cleanup today," said Thompson.
Easterseals hopes to continue cleaning up Main Street on a weekly basis.
"They feel valued, and that's what we are looking for. That they feel that they are doing something good for their community. I hope that they are able to inspire others to do the same," said Reyna Zavala, program director for EasterSeals.
"You know there used to be ice cream socials here, dances, farmers markets. Our city has gone down and it's up to us to give back and do something about it," said Zavala.
ECPD and El Centro Code Enforcement have been working to help solve the homeless problem in the downtown area.
"We have an outreach component and an enforcement component, and it's not against the law to be homeless, however, criminal activity is against the law, and we gove them the option to accept our help," said Thompson.
