Deputies locate missing kayaker in the Florida Everglades

COLLIER COUNTY, Fla. (KYMA, KECY) - A man has been found safe after spending more than a week lost in the Florida Everglades.

67-year-old Mark Miele set off on his kayaking journey on January 22. He was supposed to return on the 29.

Four days later, on February 2, Miele's bag washed up on a river bank, but there was no sign of him.

Collier County sheriff's deputies teamed up with park rangers to begin searching for him. First they found some more of his belongings. Then they got the most recent coordinates from his cell phone.

Finally, just before noon on Monday, rescue teams found Miele.

Doctors at a nearby hospital are now evaluating him.

He has yet to describe his ordeal, or explain how he got lost.
