MEXICALI, Mexico. (KYMA, KECY)-A Chinesca mural project is underway in the historical Chinesca alleyway in Mexicali.

"This alleyway hadn't been kept up with, its basically been a public restroom and dump for the past years," said Marco Miranda, local artist, and director of the Chinesca Mural project.

The local Chinese community teamed up with government officials to revitalize part of downtown Mexicali and pay homage to the history of the Chinesca in Mexicali.

"The Chinesca is a big part of the history of Mexicali, we want to bring back life to this area," said Miranda.

The alleyway has a total of fourteen murals that have been painted by local artists. The murals each tell a special story about the rise of the Chinese community in Mexicali.

In addition to the alleyway being an outside gallery, there will also be a new business opening up that will sell food and artisanal beer.

It is expected to open up to the public by the end of February.
