YUMA, Ariz. (KYMA, KECY) - Time and time again we report on accidents involving pedestrians, some of those fatal.

The biggest message from officers is to pay attention.

Just this week the Wellton Police Department reported a pedestrian died as a result of a crash.

This is the first one in Wellton in 2020 and there was one in 2019 as well.

As for the City of Yuma, there were a total of 34 in 2019.

Yuma Police are giving this advice to those walking to and from their destinations.

“if you’re walking at night and you’re a pedestrian wear light-colored clothing. Put some sort of reflective tape or reflective material on. So that the driver can see you,” said Sgt. Lori Franklin.

Sergeant Franklin said both drivers and pedestrians need to watch out for each other.

There are multiple reasons these crashes can happen such as distractions, pedestrians darting out into the road and drivers not seeing someone.

As for drivers.

“If you’re a driver and your headlights are dull and maybe they aren’t as bright as they could be so you can see things. You have to take care of your equipment too. So you have a brighter field to drive in,” said Sgt. Franklin.
