Van pulls up to Pearl Harbor base with live mortar round
3 people taken into custody and later released
HONOLULU, Hawaii (KYMA, KECY/NBC News) - Police took three people into custody after they pull up the a gate at Joint Base Pearl Harbor-Hickam with a live mortar round in the back of their van.
The gate guard was about to send away the unauthorized driver Tuesday night when he says he smelled marijuana. He says he looked into the vehicle and saw what looked like ordnance. The ordnance turned out to be a mortar round.
Military police took the three people in the van into custody for questioning. They were later released.
The incident put the base under lock down for hours.
