Fishing vessel, "Scandies Rose," sank off the coast of Alaska Wednesday night.

Five feared dead after vessel sinks off Alaskan Peninsula

JUNEAU, Alaska (KYMA, KSWT, KECY) - The Coast Guard reports no success finding five crew members missing after a crab boat sank off the coast of an Alaskan island.

"Scandies Rose" went down around ten Wednesday night off the coast of Sutwik Island.

Only two of the seven-member crew managed to make it to a life boat. They remain hospitalized.

The Coast Guard spent 20-hours searching for additional survivors without success. Cutters scoured a 14-hundred mile area before suspending rescue efforts.

Coast Guard officers say its unlikely anyone could have survived the brutal weather in the area at the time of the tragedy. Winds at at the scene topped 40-miles-an-hour, whipped up 20-foot waves, and reduced visibility to less than a mile.
