Starting off the new year with class

Local car club hosts first picnic of new year

YUMA, Ariz. (KYMA, KSWT, KECY) - While many watched eagerly as the second hand made its way to midnight, members of one local car club were preparing. While others were toasting and lighting fireworks, members of one of Yuma's oldest car clubs were prepping food.

New Class Car Club is described by locals as a "legacy club" having withstood the test of time. But, along with wishing their friends and family a Happy New Year they were also inviting them to a picnic; not just any picnic, the first of 2020. It appeared that even Mother Nature got the message, since the weather was perfect.

Few clouds filled the Yuma sky, and a light breeze made for a mild chill. The sky made for picture-perfect backdrop. Some of those taking part in the event brought their cars; many just drove by stopping to see the cars, focusing on the detail in their paint scheme, some were bewildered by how the cars were sitting; usually with one wheel in the air.

Car Club members and their families came out to enjoy the weather and the company of others in the car community. On the grill, New Class member Jose Marquez boasts about his El Salvadorian chorizo tacos known for their texture. Aside from the food and music; they spoke to other clubs about future events. More to the point, New Class is bringing back their scholarship program.

On January 18, 2020, New Class along with their community partner Texas Roadhouse will host a car show in order to raise money to help students looking to take college courses. The event will feature a variety of displays from classic, American muscle, Lowriders, Bikes and much more. The event is free to the public; but there's a fee for those looking to compete. Registration is $25, but those that participate will receive a meal from Texas Roadhouse.
