Welcome addition to critically-endangered species

LANSING, Mich. (KYMA, KSWT, KECY) - A zoo in Michigan is celebrating the arrival of a very rare baby animal.

A black rhino calf was born at the Potter Park zoo on Christmas Eve.

Experts say there are fewer than five-thousand black rhinos left on the planet.

The rhino baby is the first born at the zoo in its 100-year history.

Mom and calf are in good health. They'll continue to bond in private for the next few months. The baby won't make its public debut until later this year.

The calf still doesn't have a name. The zoo will likely have a contest to select one for the little rhino.
