Suspicious man sends school into lockdown

IMPERIAL, Calif. (KYMA, KSWT, KECY) - Imperial police arrested a man Thursday afternoon after a strange incident near a local middle school.

Police tell us they got a call just before noon regarding a suspicious man with what looked like a toy gun walking near Frank Wright Middle School. Administrators put the school on lockdown while the police investigated.

Officers say they approached the man with guns drawn because they did not know if his weapon was real or a toy. They say he initially complied with their commands, but then began to resist.

Officers were able to take the man into custody. They say the gun was indeed a toy.

The man was booked into the Imperial County Jail. Police are not identifying him at this time.

School administrators lifted the lockdown within 15-minutes. No students were ever threatened.
