An online scheme targeting women during the holiday season
YUMA, Ariz. (KYMA)- With the holidays approaching, there are scams and schemes making their rounds on social media, particularly the Secret Sister Exchange that targets women online.
The post begins with inviting women to participate in their Secret Sister gift exchange. All it takes to participate in this so-called gift exchange is for the participant to purchase a gift of up to $10 and send it to others.
From there, the post states that they will receive up to 6-36 gifts back. This isn't the case though as nobody ever receives the gifts back because it's a scam.
The Better Business Bureau (BBB) said to not fall for this scam. They relate it to a pyramid scheme which is a popular type of scheme in which participants recruit others to benefit themselves.
Upon searching Facebook you can already see several people posting and tagging their friends to this scheme, not knowing they are actually working for a scammer.
The BBB states this as a problem because even if you don't know you're working for a scammer, there can still be consequences. They advise if you come across this post, do not repost it, and report it on social media.
Don't ever give your personal information to strangers as this can lead to identity theft, and always be wary of false claims.
With it being the holiday season, scams tend to skyrocket as people are the most vulnerable during this specific time.
If you have fallen victim to this or any other scam report it to the BBB and contact local authorities.
