YUMA, Ariz. (KYMA)- The Yuma Police Department (YPD) is hosting a fundraiser to raise funds for two special events.

Beauty and the Beards is making its comeback within the department to raise funds for the Special Olympics and YPD's banquet ceremony.

Men are able to grow out a beard no longer than three-quarters of an inch. However, woman are able to paint their nails, color their hair, and not have to wear a tight bun.

Per regulation, there are strict restrictions on grooming and hair within the department. Due to safety issues, officers are not allowed to have beards in case of needing a tight seal for gas masks in the event of an emergency.

Due to circumstances, officers are required to carry a razor with them in the event that they have to use a gas mask out on the field and need to shave their beards off.

The event began at the beginning of November and ends in April 2020. It's a $25 monthly fee or $125 for the entire six months that officers have to pay to participate.

If you would like to sponsor an officer or donate to either the special Olympics you can contact the YPD at (928) 373-4700.
