Fire displaces multiple families at Palm Shadows Apartments

UPDATE

Seven residents were displaced from their homes after a fire broke out at the Palm Shadows Apartments on South 10th Avenue, Sunday.

The Yuma Fire Department ( YFD ) said when personnel arrived to the scene, there was heavy smoke and fire coming from apartment #3 of a 6-unit block of apartments in the complex.

YFD said most of the damage was contained to the apartment where the fire started. However, the seven residents from a total of three apartments needed assistance from the American Red Cross.

The Yuma Police Department provided assistance with traffic and crowd control.

According to firefighters, the fire was believed to have started in the living room of apartment #3.

There were 3 apartments occupied at the time of the fire and all residents were able to evacuate safely.

The cause of the fire is being investigated, but it is not believed to have been intentionally set.

ORIGINAL STORY

An apartment near S. 10th Avenue and W. 1st street was reported to be ablaze early Sunday morning, with families in need of evacuation.

First responders arrived at approximately 5:51 am. Yuma Police Department ( YPD ) officers evacuated the residences to assist Yuma Fire Department ( YFD ).

The 100 block of south 10th Avenue was closed for about two hours. No injuries have been reported. The cause of the residential fire is currently under investigation.

The Yuma Red Cross Disaster Action Team (DAT) volunteers were also dispatched this morning to assist the 7 individuals displaced by the fire. The DAT team provided for the emergency needs of the six adults and one child who were displaced.
