September high temperatures set record

Scientists say September sizzled all around the world. In fact, it set some new records for high temperatures, while tying some others.

The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) says 2019 tied with 2015 for the hottest September on record globally. It says temperatures around the world were 1.71 degrees hotter than the 20th century average.

Temperatures on land were the hottest on record for the month.

NOAA calculates the Earth is on pace for the second warmest year on record, behind 2016.

Scientists say the western United States was actually the only part of the country not on track to set new heat records.

Yuma’s average September temperature was 99.3 degrees, slightly below the average of 101.

NOAA’s climate monitoring chief says the warming’s been going on for decades. He blames the trend on the burning of fossil fuels.
