Brush fire forces evacuations in San Diego

A brush fire forces evacuations in San Diego’s uptown area.

The blaze – now dubbed the Fairmount Fire – broke out around 1:30 Tuesday afternoon in the Talmadge area. Flames spread quickly through a densely vegetated canyon.

The San Diego Police and Fire Departments began issuing evacuation orders around 2 p.m.

Firefighting helicopters began dousing the flames around the same time. No word yet on the level of containment.

Some 1,500 San Diego Gas & Electric customers are without power because of the blaze. The utility expects to turn the lights back on by 9:30 p.m.
