One lane of State Route 111 is scheduled to re-open Friday night.

A natural geyser forced Caltrans to shut down the roadway at Davis and Gillespie roads near Niland on September 27.

The geyer’s existed since the 1950’s , but it’s been moving steadily closer to the highway since 2016. It’s already encroached upon the nearby railroad tracks .

Caltrans is now working on a new road around the geyser, but it will take some time.

It plans to open one lane Friday. Both lanes should re-open by Saturday night.

In the interim, workers with flags will be on site directing traffic while crews continue the paving project.

The project is expected to continue into November. For updates on the Niland Geyser Mitigation Project you can visit the Caltrans website.
