California to become first state to require abortion services on campus

California will become the first state to require public colleges and universities to offer abortion medications at campus health centers.

Governor Gavin Newsom announced Friday he’d signed the bill into law. It’s a dramatic change of position from his predecessor. Governor Jerry Brown vetoed the measure last year.

The bill’s Democratic authors say it’s in California’s best interest to ensure women have access to abortion care. Religious and pro-life groups opposed the legislation.

None of the state’s public colleges or universities currently offer such services.

The program will be entirely funded through private donations.
