City council incumbent posts about tranquilizing students

A Facebook post published by city council incumbent Mike Shelton, but soon after deleted called students “animals” and talked about “tranquilizing” them.

The post written by the Yuma City councilman who also works as a substitute teacher wrote the post about the number of detention slips he served to students.

Shelton said he was warned the sixth-period class was “bad” and was prepared. He explained the students were misbehaving by taking out their phones and roughhousing.

He wrote that rather than losing his temper he instead tranquilized them.

“My tactic is to take the animals in order and tranquilize them one at a time,” wrote Shelton.

He wrote that as he took the role of the class he made sure to match the name with the face and wrote the “D” for detention next to each student’s name that he was going to give detention.

Eric Patten with Yuma Union High School District ( YUHSD ), confirmed that a staff member reported the post to the human resources department and is currently investigating the incident.

” Substitutes are not technically YUHSD employees, but the district would have the ability to decide, obviously, who substitutes the class in the district, they can determine that who we utilize as subs or not. Currently, regarding the Facebook post, the Human Resource Department has been made aware of it and is investigating it. ”

News 11 did reach out to Mike Shelton regarding the Facebook post, he did not want to comment thoroughly on the initial post, but did say it has been interpreted the wrong way.

Shelton added that he loves all kids and his students and in no way wants this to hurt his credibility.
