Pep Boys to pay multi-million dollar settlement

The Pep Boys auto parts chain will pay near $4-million to settle claims it illegally disposed of hazardous waste at its California stores.

District attorneys in nine California counties filed suit against the chain. It has about 150 stores in the state.

The suit claimed regulators inspected 19 facilities and found automobile fluids, batteries, aerosol cans, and electronics were sent to landfills not authorized to handle hazardous waste. It also accused Pep Boys of disposing of customer records without shredding them.

The lawsuit claimed the stores used the faulty practices for at least three-years.

Pep Boys says it took immediate action after becoming aware of the problems. It says it will ensure its stores comply with the law moving forward.
