Canal crash leaves one person dead in Somerton

One person dies in a crash in Somerton that sent a car careening into a canal.

The accident happened just before noon Friday afternoon at County 15th and Avenue D.

A witness says the driver of a Toyota Camry failed to stop at the intersection. A Jeep Cherokee, which had the right of way, hit it. The witness says the Camry flew across the canal and landed on its south bank before partially sinking into the water.

Bystanders pulled a passenger out of the car, but the driver was too seriously injured to move.

Somerton Cocopah Paramedics extricated the driver and took him to Yuma Regional Medical Center where he later died. They also sent the passenger to the hospital with less serious injuries.

The driver and passenger of the Jeep, a grandmother and her grandchild, got hurt when their airbags deployed. The older woman refused treatment, but paramedics did take the child to the hospital for evaluation.
