Judge restores block of asylum ban

A federal judge today restored a nationwide injunction against President Donald Trump’s move to ban asylum seekers who pass through another country to reach the United States.

U.S. District Court Judge Jon Tigar issued the order after reviewing new evidence in an ongoing lawsuit over the policy.

It’s the second time Judge Tigar has blocked the regulation.

He ruled in July that it conflicted with federal asylum laws. However, the 9th Circuit Court of Appeals narrowed his injunction, blocking the policy in Arizona and California, while allowing it to stand in Texas and New Mexico.

Today’s decision once again puts it on hold nationwide.

The Trump administration’s fast-track asylum regulation prevents migrants from seeking asylum in the U.S. if they first pass through another country without seeking protection from that nation.

The policy effectively cuts off asylum protections for Central American migrants.
