Local principal receives grant for out-of-school programs

Sheila Mendoza, principal of Salida del Sol, was recently honored with the esteemed 21st Century Award.

The 21st Century Award is given through the State of Arizona’s 21st Century Grant program. Salida del Sol was awarded over $540,000 to expand out of school programs for students, parents, and loved ones.

Through these out-of-school programs, students are taught useful tools such as digital skills, cultural awareness and civic responsibility to make them empathetic and well-rounded learners.

This initiative is the only federally funded source dedicated exclusively to out-of-school-time programs. Some resources offered for parents including language lessons and job development programs.
