Calexico councilmember arrested on suspicion of DUI

California Highway Patrol confirmed that Calexico Councilmember Rosie Fernandez was in a car collision and arrested on suspicion of driving under the influence, just two months after allegedly being involved in a hit-and-run . Some residents blamed the city.

Businessman Guillermo Hermosillo said, “Our city manager and our chief of police failed to protect our residents and the public by not acting on the previous accident.”

They’re planning to take action.

“A group of citizens are getting together to file a complaint with the attorney general to look into why the city hasn’t done anything on the first accident,” Hermosillo said.

CHP reported that Fernandez was driving a car early Saturday morning, around 4:55 a.m., going southbound on Highway 111, north of McCabe Road. The report said she was going above the speed limit, between 70 and 80 miles per hour, when her car hit another vehicle hauling a trailer, causing both cars to go out of control. She was arrested on suspicion of driving under the influence.

City Mayor Bill Hodge said, “At this point in time we’re going to wait for more information to be coming forward from her lawyer and other sources of legal entities to get the facts.”

CHP found Fernandez still seat belted inside her car. The other driver was released and Fernandez was taken to El Centro hospital for medical attention.

” We cannot take her off the council. Only councilwoman Fernandez if she chooses to resign can do so. The voters can take her out by having a recall. Those are the options, ” Hodge said.

We reached out to Council Member Rosie Fernandez for comment, but she has not been available. We’ve also reached out to the victim’s family who said the victim is suffering from some injuries due to the collision, and they are seeking the assistance of an attorney.

Calexico police said they submitted the hit-and-run case to the District Attorney’s Office for review.
