News 11 speaks with ‘The Girl Who Can’t Smell’

Yazmin Salazar is speaking out to the community on her Anosmia diagnosis and how she has used her platform to spread awareness on the condition.

Anosmia is better known as the lack of smell or odor. Some are born with the diagnosis, and some develop it over time.

Anosmia affects about six million people in the United States.

Salazar created a Youtube channel specifically for those who may be diagnosed with Anosmia and don’t know exactly how to cope.

“I created what is called The Girl Who Can’t Smell which is a resource that helps people understand what anosmia is,” said Salazar.

The very first question we all may be asking ourselves is, well can she taste?

“Yes I can taste and what I like to explain is that obviously our tongue is what processes, you know the four basic flavors, salty, sweet, bitterness, and you know the sourness of foods. So I detect those, what I do believe though is that my sense of taste might be a little bit more rooted than everyone else’s,” said Salazar.

Some of those diagnosed with Anosmia may not even know they have it. Salazar found out she couldn’t smell at a young age.

“I remember I found out because I had one a pair of one of those scratch and sniff stickers that were really popular at the time and everyone was making a big commotion and I was like..I don’t get it,” said Salazar.
