IID ask for public’s help to find impostor in latest scam

The Imperial Irrigation District is asking the public for help catching impostors and callers claiming to be IID employees.

It starts off with a phone call claiming you have a past due bill and if you don’t pay over the phone, you’re in danger of having your power shut off.

Eight cases were reported last week.

IID is asking the public for help tracking these impostors.

“Our approach at the district is not to call you. We will send you letters. We will put door hangers on your door and things like that to remind you,” said IID Communications Specialist, Bob Schettler.

Residents should report if they’ve fallen victim to the scam.

Schettler added, “When you get a call like that simply hang up and call IID back directly. Don’t redial the number that you were called. Often that’s a spoof number. It looks like IID was calling you but it’s not. These guys are tricky out there.”

IID is working with law enforcement to stop the scammers.

Lt. Jimmy Duran, with the Imperial County Sheriff’s Office, said, “We’re asking the community to help us identify this individual. Who was last seen wearing a beige uniform with IID logos? And he was driving a white truck. That’s all the information we have.”

One resident had an impostor show up at their house. Authorities said this is unusual for these scammers.

“Somebody showing up to your doorstep as a follow up from a call is a little bit different than what we’re used to seeing,” Duran said.

IID officials said to be alert and if a scammer comes to your home, call the police and remember specific details about them.
