Convicted murderer who crossed illegally with caravan members arrested

A convicted murderer from Honduras was apprehended Saturday by Border Patrol after he entered the United States illegally with members of the migrant caravan, according to U.S. Customs and Border Protection.

CBP officials said agents noticed three people crossing the border illegally about a mile east of the San Ysidro Port of Entry at around 11 p.m. on November 24.

Agents arrested the three men and transported them to a nearby Border Patrol station where one of the men was identified as 46-year-old Miguel Angel Ramirez. Authorities learned Ramirez was recently released from prison in Honduras. He later admitted he was arrested for murder in Honduras and was just released four months ago.

San Diego Sector Border Patrol’s Foreign Operations Branch confirmed the man’s statement with Honduran Consulate in Los Angeles. It was also determined that Ramirez served ten years in a Honduran prison for homicide and three years for robbery. Ramirez told authorities he traveled with the migrant caravan from Honduras to Guatemala and Mexico.

“It was Border Patrol agents’ effort and valued partnership with the Honduran Consulate in Los Angeles that helped us identify a dangerous convicted felon moving amongst the migrant caravan,” said Rodney Scott, San Diego Sector Chief Patrol Agent.

CBP said the two other men, ages 22 and 38, were Honduran nationals. One of the men was previously deported.

All three men are being held in Department of Homeland Security custody pending deportation proceedings.
