CBP conducting readiness exercises at Arizona ports

As preparations continue for the possible arrival of the migrant caravan, U.S. Customs and Border Protection began conducting readiness exercises Tuesday at the land ports of entry throughout Arizona.

According to CBP officials, operational exercises were increased as well as mobilization of resources. Preparations also include training exercises, deploying additional CBP personnel, and joining forces with the U.S. military to strengthen the ports of entry.

Department of Defense personnel will continue to install barbed wire, pre-positioning barriers, barricades, and fencing as part of CBP’s Operation Secure Line. This includes the addition of large barriers, Conex boxes on limited use northbound traffic lanes, and tactical exercises with staff.

CBP plans to update the public when the materials are removed and when lanes will reopen yet this will happen after the caravan arrives at the border.

Officials said travelers may expect longer wait times at some ports of entry because of these exercises.
