How Rep. Martha McSally can still make it to the Arizona Senate

Representative Martha McSally lost to her Democratic opponent Kyrsten Sinema in the race for Arizona Senate Monday evening.

However, the lately appointed Sen. Jon Kyl, who replaced Sen. John McCain said he is only committed to serving through the end of the year, leaving another open Senate seat.

“I suspect he will resign and that will give Governor Ducey the opportunity to appoint a replacement for him and that person would be able to serve two years before they would stand for election in the next general election,” said Russell Jones, the Yuma County Republican Chairman.

Many have speculated even before the election that Rep. McSally could be the replacement.

“I am in no liberty to say but I am aware of whom the candidates are and certainly McSally is now added to that list and certainly qualified as congresswomen.”

What makes her a contender is her military background, committees she has sat on, and her engagement in immigration, Jones said.

“Even though she [Rep. Martha McSally] was not able to win this election, I don’t think she is over yet. There is really no quitting in that lady,” said Russell Jones, the Yuma County Republican Chairman.

If she was appointed to the Arizona Senate it would be another first for Arizona.

“They’d get sworn in at the same time and you would have two women senators from Arizona. Before we never had one. now we could have two at the same time that’s great,” Jones said. “But again that’s not my decision that’s the governor’s and there are several other very strong candidates.”
